From January 29, 2009, to January 2015, Illinois was battered by numerous natural disasters: ice storms, blizzards, floods, tornadoes, and drought.

The people of Illinois rose to the occasion during every natural disaster to volunteer to lend a helping hand to their neighbors in need.

“The heart of America is the heart of a volunteer.”

Gov. Pat Quinn used the power of his office to issue disaster declarations, secure state and federal aid for recovery, and join with emergency management professionals and volunteers to get communities back on their feet.
